ColoniAle
ColoniAle consists of a one-hour beer-centric house tour followed with a social time in the backyard of the Tate House where you will be given a Tate House pint glass and 2 pints of Mast Landing ale. Mast Landing Brewing is the generous sponsor of our event and is providing guests with their signature ale. Imbibing is encouraged!!!

The Maritime Marauder: Captain Henry Mowat- A Lecture by Author Harry Gratwick
Join us for a talk by author Harry Gratwick about one of Portland’s most infamous characters, Captain Henry Mowat, a British sea captain who sailed into Portland’s harbor and bombarded the town by cannonball for much of the day on October 18, 1775. This act resulted in the destruction of more than two-thirds of the town and was a punitive measure against patriot activities during the Revolution.
Summer Outdoor Contra Dance
Tate House Museum is offering a Summer Contra Dance in the beautiful Tate House backyard & garden with live music by Ben Foss on fiddle, Bethany Waickman on guitar, and noted caller Maggie Robinson on Wed Aug 20 from 5:00 -7:00 pm. In the event of rain, the dance will be held on Aug 21 at the same time. (check our website if the weather is questionable.)
Songs of Maine Concert with Troy Bennett
Portland musician Troy Bennett will offer a concert of original Maine historical songs in Tate House Museum’s beautiful backyard and garden.
Bennett is an award-winning journalist and folksinger who has spent more than 25 years chronicling current and old-time Maine events in both song and newsprint. Bennett’s longtime storytelling efforts have created a unique body of work illuminating his home state’s quirky, often funny, and always poignant history.
Welcome Lafayette at the Means House!
In 1825 the Marquis de Lafayette visited Portland and we will commemorate this event by welcoming him at the historic home of his friend and comrade James Means. James and his wife Mary and daughter Sophia will be dressed to greet him for the occasion. Details about tickets and other information coming soon- mark your calendars and don’t miss this historic event!
Community Day with Free Tours and Historical Flag Raising
Join us for a FREE Community Day when complimentary tours will be offered at 10 am, 11 am, and 12 noon (three tours, every hour on the hour, last one at 12 noon) followed by a special Continental flag raising at 1 pm. This Community Day will include tours of our 18th century garden and refreshments for visitors. And, our unique Gift Shop will be open.
Spring Plant & Herb Sale
The General Public is invited to attend our Annual Meeting to learn about Tate House Museum activities in 2024 and more to come in 2025. Members will have a short business meeting to approve updated Bylaws and restated Articles of Incorporation. The program will include refreshments and performance of a Revolutionary song “Alice Greele(y)’s Tavern by Banjournalist Troy Bennett. There is no charge to attend.
Location is the second floor of the Stroudwater Christian Church located at 1520 Westbook Street in Portland.
Birth of the American Revolution
Join us to commemorate the hanging of two lanterns in the Old North Church belfry on the evening of April 18, 1775 to alert patriots that the British were moving by sea.

18th Century Botanical Dyeing Workshop
Join us for a unique late summer workshop held in the backyard and garden of Tate House. Participants will dye cotton fabric using the same botanical dye bath method that was employed in the eighteenth century.

Imagining Freedom Cyanotype Workshop
Gain in-depth learning about the history of the Tate House, Stroudwater Village, and the state of Maine, and explore the themes of Imagining Freedom through cyanotypes.
Community Day
Join us for Community Day to commemorate Juneteenth. Free tours of the Tate House featuring the artwork "Imagining Freedom" by Ashley Page will be offered every hour on the hour from 10 am-3 pm (last tour).
