In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Tate House Museum is offering a special Revolutionary War exhibit that considers the activities of Tate family members – father George and his four adult sons, Samuel, George, William, and Robert, each of whom responded differently and equivocally to the American cause. How the Tates negotiated their place, possessions, and degrees of loyalty to the British Crown tells the story of the difficult choices people were forced to make during the challenging revolutionary period in colonial Portland. James Means, a staunch Patriot who became the Tates’ neighbor and whose 1797 house still stands opposite Tate House, will represent another perspective.
Come celebrate the opening of our exhibit with refreshments and a view of the exhibit.
