Summer Outdoor Contra Dance

  • Tate House Museum 1267 Westbrook Street Portland Maine 04102 (map)

Join us for a Summer Contra Dance in the beautiful Tate House backyard & garden with live music by Ben Foss on fiddle, Bethany Waickman on guitar, and noted caller Maggie Robinson. In the event of rain, the dance will be held on Aug 21 at the same time. (check our website if the weather is questionable.)

Contra dance in America, a form of social folk dancing, evolved from English Country Dancing during the colonial period. It became popular in New England then spread throughout the country. Some of the simpler dances from the colonial and early American periods will be taught and backed by live music from accomplished musicians.

Come experience lively tunes, friendly people, and the beautiful surroundings of the Tate House yard and garden, which will make our Contra dance a pleasant and energizing experience. All ages of dancers are welcome from beginners to experts. No special clothing is required, but comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended as the dance takes place in our grassy yard.

Tickets will be available at the door: $15 adults, $10 children 7-12 (6 and under free), $30 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children ages 7-12). THM members receive $3-$5 off ticket prices ($12 for adults and $25 for families with memberships.)

Tate House will be open from 4:15-5:00 pm for a sneak peek. Picnics welcome. BYO chairs or blankets for reclining between dances. Get active and come out to support Tate House Museum while enjoying community-connecting fun!
